Measurement Bias in the Canadian Consumer Price Index: An Update

چکیده

ƒ The total CPI measurement bias is estimated to be about 0.5 percentage point per year over the 2005–11 period, consistent with the Bank’s earlier findings. Slightly more than half of this bias is caused by the fixed nature of the CPI basket of goods and services. More frequent updates of the weights that are used in the basket would reduce this error by more accurately reflecting changes in spending patterns following a change in relative prices and the introduction of new products.

Application of the original price index formula in the CPI commodity substitution bias measurement

In this paper we propose the application of the original, superlative price index formula for the measurement of commodity substitution bias associated with Consumer Price Index (CPI). In our simulation study we compare CPI bias values calculated by using the original price index formula with those calculated on the basis of some known, superlative price indices.

Mind the Gap – Volatile Measurement Bias in the Index of Consumer Prices and Monetary Policy

I argue that the gap between consumer price index (CPI) inflation and actual inflation varies systematically across the business cycle. CPI inflation is the change in expenditure required to afford a fixed basket of varieties. Actual inflation is the change in minimum expenditure required to afford a given level of utility. In a New Keynesian model with variety entry and exit and sticky prices,...

Exchange rate pass-through in Iran: Exchange rate effects on the consumer price index

The purpose of this study is to find an accurate estimate of the exchange rate-CPI relationship in Iran over the past three decades. The results of the Granger causality test in the frequency domain demonstrate a strong causation from the exchange rate to CPI especially in the long run. The results of the wavelet analysis show that in the currency crisis periods, the exchange rate-CPI correlati...

Retrospective Price Indices and Substitution Bias

The consumer price index (CPI) is usually computed as a fixed-weighted Laspeyres price index, with the weights updated at discrete intervals only. It is well known that the Laspeyres functional form entails a substitution bias. One way to reduce it would be to use chained indices, and superlative ones if possible. Unfortunately, the necessary data are often missing. This paper proposes a simple...

Infl ation Measurement for Central Bankers

Interest in the measurement of infl ation has increased signifi cantly in recent years for a number of reasons. First, infl ation rates have fallen signifi cantly since the early 1980s. Second, many central banks have adopted infl ation targets. The combination of these two factors has increased the importance of accurate measurement. Third, rapid quality improvements, particularly in the infor...
